On my 16th birthday one of my presents was a book called “Dear Me: A Letter to My Sixteen-Year-Old Self” and it contained lots of celebrity letters to their 16 year old selves. I was so interested to read the advice they wrote back to themselves for the future and such and it really made me want to write my own letter even though I had just turned sixteen! Four days ago I turned 26. I was 16 TEN YEARS AGO. Wow. So now is the perfect time to send this letter.
Dear super-sweet-sixteen Nikita,
16. Able to purchase lottery tickets and scratch cards – ten years on and you will still get IDed for these things so y’know get your ID out prepared beforehand.
You are going to be very lucky with adventures you go on, people you meet and to be honest life is pretty sweet! BUT please don’t get too content in your luck because soon you’re going to go on a bit of a different ride. Your entire life is going to change in just over a night, don’t panic – but you’re going to have to grow up a little quicker than you probably intended.
I will warn you now it is a bit of a huge rocky ride, you’ll go through all kinds of emotions at once. BUT you have the two most important people in your life. Mum and Bruv. You’ll realise that in most cases you are a lot happier and you have the people who care most about you surrounding you.
Don’t be afraid to come out of your shell and make new friends and have a great laugh a long the way. Why shouldn’t you smile? Never give up either, because I tell you one thing the graduation gown in boiling hot weather was quite unbearable…. but oh so worth it.
Life will have its ups and downs, but I’m sure you will have slightly figured this out by now. I cannot promise the world to you, nor can I give you advice to heal you from your demons. Those demons become dark, they will honestly torture you. So all I can say is TALK. Talk to those around you. Talk to those who care for you and love you. I cannot stress enough how much just talking would help. Trust me, I wish I had.
Do what you want to do, don’t be afraid of what others think about your choices. If it makes you happy and if you want to do it – do. You wouldn’t believe me if I told you that in ten years time you’d have two tattoos but you do! Don’t worry though – no sleeves are on the cards!
Everything will work out you just won’t realise it yet. I still don’t realise it now but at least I have the faith and hope that it will.
Keep your chin up lass!
Lots of love,
